If you missed a national TV foodies program featuring three Big Island eateries, you'll have another chance to see the show on PBS Hawaii on New Year's Eve. It'll inspire your tastebuds for your first breakfast in 2013!
Above, see the sugar-dusted treats that are Hawaii's gift from the Portuguese community at Baker Tom's Malasadas in Papaikou. Other Hawaii Island restaurants featured are Ken's House of Pancakes (where I always seem to find myself at some point when I visit Hilo) and Hawaiian Style Cafe in Waimea.
The show is Breakfast Special 2: Revenge of the Omelets (Mon., Dec. 31, 9:30 pm). The local spots are in the second 15 minutes of the progam, which highlights breakfast places around the country and also includes local advice from James and Beverly Rubio (pictured). They write a food blog, bigislandgrinds.com.
The show will be re-broadcast at 11:00 pm Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2013.
This is a great photo of "that old devil sea" as our grandmother, Lana, would say. My brother, Joe Gauen, has taken many wonderful photos of island life and surf over the years.
