Comedians often use a funny tactic that they may not know has a name. Well, they call it a punchline.
The dictionary term is paraprosdokian. A word buff shared it with me.
Paraprosdokian is a line that makes an abrupt turn into something surprising or unexpected. As in:
The evening news is where they begin with "Good evening," and then they proceed to tell you why it isn't.
Or:
Do not argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience.
Or:
I sleep 8 hours a day and at least 10 at night.
Come to think of it, paraprosdokian sounds like a word made up by a comedian.
