I just Googled Pele, Hawaiian Goddess of Fire. Digital phenom meets ancient spirit.
Thought I'd learn a new Pele legend, but I read about Pele and love.
Found this wise paragraph in an essay by an online Pele book reviewer:
"If there's anything, through my reading, Pele has taught me about love, it's that despite its ups and downs, its losses and its gains, you should love with your entire being--your whole heart. Be yourself, express yourself, and do not be afraid.
"Be fearless in the face of love, strong in the midst of heartbreak, unashamed of what you want, and ever present in what you do."
I tend to think of Pele in her other forms, like a small white dog or an old woman who could cross your path--and you'd better treat her right.
Now I recall her as that powerful figure in a Herb Kane painting, with hair of ropy pahoehoe lava. Her fire forms are a metaphor for love: smouldering, sparks, wisps of flame, torches, infernos, volcanic eruptions, and oh yes, embers and ashes.
With her firepower, I hope she doesn't take offense at being Googled...
