Hawaii's statewide spelling bee, picked up by the business group aio with community partners after the demise of the competition's longtime sponsor, The Honolulu Advertiser, will be televised live, in primetime, on Saturday, March 19, 2011. It will also be carried live on local radio.
It's a departure from recent years, when the bee was taped by Oceanic Time Warner and shown later at various times of day on cable.
This year, the bee will be held in PBS Hawaii studios in Manoa, and PBS Hawaii will carry the competition live in primetime hours, from 7 to 9 pm.
The bee will be simulcast on radio on ESPN 1500.
Other community partners are the State Department of Education and the Hawaii Association of Independent Schools.
At PBS Hawaii, we're glad to be part of maintaining this tradition for middle-schoolers across the state. It's an educational contest that can have all of the drama of the play-offs!
