Happy 234th birthday! At this very moment I'm attending the biggest, most spectacular party in the country celebrating the founding of our nation--and I'm relaxing at home.
I'm watching A CAPITOL FOURTH on PBS Hawaii. It's hosted by actor Jimmy Smits, and Gladys Knight is singing on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol. Eighteen cameras are poised to catch the upcoming fireworks over the District of Columbia. Camera locations include the White House, Washington Monument and across the Potomac River.
My favorite part of this annual show is Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture,” punctuated with live cannon fire. This concert/pyrotechnics display is watched by hundreds of thousands of people in attendance, millions like me in the national television audience, and armed forces serving overseas. It’s as if we’re all at a holiday campfire…
