Less than two months ago, PBS Hawaii added live international newscasts from NHK World, based in Japan. This afternoon, NHK World's Newsline scored a global scoop.
PBS Hawaii viewers learned at @2:50 this afternoon, as they watched our live NHK feed, that Japan's Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama was stepping down. The breaking news came before CNN or Google News picked it up. I'm told that when CNN first ran the story, it named as its source NHK.
Hatoyama, who took office last fall, has faced the wrath of constituents after backtracking on a promise to move an unpopular U.S. Marine base from Okinawa. Okinawa Island is where most of the U.S. military presence in Japan is housed.
