Monday night (June 2), Manu Boyd and other members-for-life of the outstanding hula group, Halau Na Kamalei, join us live in studio at PBS Hawaii to host an encore presentation of a compelling national documentary that centers on the halau.
The documentary follows the all-male group as dancers train under kumu hula Robert Cazimero, for the "Olympics of Hula"--the Merrie Monarch Festival in Hilo. And it explores the difference between the views held by ancient Hawaiians and modern Westerners about male hula dancing.
The documentary, funded by Pacific Islanders in Communications, was seen across the country last month on the PBS program "Independent Lens." It re-airs from 7:30 to 9 pm Monday (June 2) on PBS Hawaii.
Halau members will be on hand talking with us, and since it'll be a "Pledge Your Support to PBS Hawaii Night," we'll have a phone bank staffed by volunteers, Realtors from CRS, Hawaii Aloha Chapter.
Many Hawaii folks have asked if they can buy a copy of the documentary. You'll have an opportunity during Monday night's show. Make a tax-deductible contribution to non-profit PBS Hawaii and we'll send you a DVD of the program as a thank-you gift! Other mahalo presents include Cazimero albums. Your donation will help us continue to present high-quality programs about Hawaii and the Pacific/Asia region and other places of interest.
